There are a few things that you want to be aware of when planning a trip to Japan. Some items you need to get in your country, or your stay in Japan can easily crash your budget. Here are some point for you to consider.
Visa
COVID changed many things, including rules for issuing a visa. Be sure to check if you need to get a visa before arriving in Japan, or are you eligible for non-visa entry.
Currency, Cash & Cards
The currency is the Japanese yen (JPY). Exchanging your currency is possible, but not easy. So have a card with which you can withdraw some cash via ATM at a convenience store. Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, but you'll bump into cash-only places.
Public Transport

Flights and Accommodation

Electricity
The voltage in Japan is 100 volts AC. If you are bringing electrical appliances from the US, you are OK. Health and Safety
Travel insurance is essential in Japan. Japan’s population is covered by the statutory health insurance (SHIS) and by Public Social Assistance Program. All citizens and residents are required by law to enroll in a SHIS plan. Foreign visitors are not covered. Click HERE for the details.
Weather
Japan has a humid subtropical climate. The summers are hot and humid, while the winters are cold and snowy. No matter the season, you'll want to pack for all types of weather. Even in the summer, if you go to the mountains, you'll need something warm.
Language
The official language of Japan is Japanese. Many Japanese people do speak English, but you might find it difficult to find a person ready to talk to you. On the other hand, some Japanese will be ready to assist you even if they don't speak English.

Smoking in Japan
Smoke only in designated smoking areas. Carry a small portable ashtray. Portable ashtrays can be purchased at convenience stores. Many cities prohibit smoking on the streets in busy districts. Smoking is prohibited on the platforms of railway stations.
