Bowing

Bowing (Ojigi) in Japan, is an important etiquette that is learned from a young age. Depending on the situation, a bow can be a small nod of the head or a deep bend at the waist. A deep, long bow indicates respect, and a smaller nod is usually less formal.

Shoes off Indoors

It's customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home, traditional inns (ryokan), temples, shrines, and certain restaurants. Slippers are often provided for indoor use.

Personal Space

Respect Personal Space: Japanese don’t like to touch with other people unless they are family and close friends. The intimate “zone” in Japan is half meter, and is only for close friends and family. Personal space is one and a quarter meter. Avoid entering even this space.

Public Transport

Don't eat or drink. Don't talk on the phone. Be quiet. Obey floor markings. Don't block escalators. While sitting, don't put your bag on the seat beside you. Manage your belongings. Be aware of "women's-only" cars.

Eating and Drinking

Slurping noodles is considered a sign of enjoying the meal. When drinking in a group, it's customary to pour drinks for others and let them pour for you. Do not stick chopsticks upright into a bowl of rice. Also, don't pass food directly from one set of chopsticks to another, as this is associated with funerals.

Queueing

Waiting in line is essential in Japan. Always stand in line for public transportation, shops, and even when entering elevators. In Japan, in places such as convenience stores or super markets, ensure you don't stand too close to the person in front of you. Look for and follow the signs and stickers on the floor.

Tipping

Unlike many Western countries, tipping is not a common practice in Japan and may even be considered rude. Exceptional service is already included in the pricing. In Japan, from the most luxurious hotels, to the most humble ramen shops, you can expect to receive great service – with no strings attached.

PDA (Public Display of Affection)

Physical displays of affection, like hugging and kissing, are not as common in Japan. Maintain a respectful distance in public. Some countries have laws against PDA. Japan relies on social shame and disapproving glares.

Mind Your Trash

Nowadays, public trash bins are relatively rare in Japan. Carry a small plastic bag to collect your trash until you find a suitable disposal place. Convenience stores, some train stations have containers where you can dispose a small bag of trash.

Being On Time

In Japan you are expected to be exactly on time. People will arrive earlier, to make sure they are punctual, and wait so they enter the room, or meet the person exactly on the promised minute. If something happens and you'll be late, inform about it as soon as possible.

Entering a Shinto Shrine

A shrine means Shinto, Japan’s indigenous religion. Purify yourself with water. Bow when entering the shrine. From the Torii gate, walk on a side. The center is for the god only. Don't visit a shrine when sick, have an open wound. These are considered causes of impurity.

At a Buddhist Temple

When entering the grounds of a temple, it’s important not to step directly on the threshold of the main gate. Women should enter with their right foot first, while men enter with their left. Purify Yourself with water or incense smoke. To pray, first throw a few coins into the offering box.
